The real life Nicholas Flamel was a French scribe and manuscript seller during his lifetime. Although, the legend is that he was an alchemist who made the philosopher's stone as seen famously in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. He lived in Paris in the 14th century, so the movie crediting he would soon be having his 600th birthday, is actually accurate.
Harry Potter tends to focus more on Nicholas Flamel as an alchemist but, he was really known for his reputation as an author. The character version is based off of books such as, "Legendary accounts of Flamel's life are based on 17th-century works, primarily Livre des figures hiéroglyphiques. " (Wikipedia- Nicholas Flamel) The original myth of the philosophers stone was that it could turn base metals into gold, unlike the properties seen in the movie. Flamel is included in other famous works as well, such as, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindlewald.
