Scouting for Food

Recommendations to Unit Leaders for Scouting for Food Storefront Collection:

1.  In advance, make specific arrangements to drop off collected food at the food pantry.

If your Charter Organization has its own food pantry, please make sure they are included in your unit's collection efforts!

This is also the time to learn if there are specific needs/requests from your local food pantry.

If your food pantry has specific requests, display a sign that lists specific items for customers to snap a picture.

Enlist your scout families/troop trailer/food pantry volunteer to provide transportation of collected goods from the storefront to the food pantry.  If your food pantry has a vehicle, arrange for it to be at the collection site.

2.  At an upcoming pack or troop meeting, make a sign or signs to post or hold at the storefront to announce the Scouting for

Food collection signs should include your unit (town and number), food pantry destination, and any specific requests from the food pantry.

3.  Scouts should wear Class A uniforms and be prepared for the weather.  Please take pictures of scouts!

4.  Units should also plan in advance to have a means to collect donations.

Grocery stores, warehouse stores, and liquor stores should all be able to provide boxes upon request.  Ask grocery stores early in the morning before the boxes are broken down.

Collect reusable bags from your unit's families in advance.

5.  Have a responsible adult prepared to receive cash donations for customers who prefer to participate in that way.

Bring a money bag or box or collection jar.

Unless specified otherwise, money collected storefront for Scouting for Food is to go to a local food pantry.  Our first suggestion for any money that is collected is to exchange the money for gift cards from the grocery store where you are collecting.

6.  Please leave the collection area cleaner than how you found it and thank the store manager/customer service representative as you leave.
