π₯ Chapter 1: Chemical Reactions and Equations
π― Class 10 Science Best Notes (With Hindi Explanation)
π§ͺ 1. What is a Chemical Reaction?
A chemical reaction is a process in which one or more substances (reactants) change into new substances (products) with different properties.
πΉ Example:
Magnesium + Oxygen β Magnesium Oxide
2Mg + Oβ β 2MgO
π Hindi: Chemical reaction ek aisa process hota hai jisme purane padarth (reactants) naye padarth (products) mein badal jaate hain jinki properties alag hoti hain.
π§Ύ 2. What is a Chemical Equation?
A chemical equation is a way to represent a chemical reaction using chemical formulas and symbols.
πΉ Example:
Zn + HβSOβ β ZnSOβ + Hβ
π Hindi: Chemical equation ek reaction ko likhne ka scientific tarika hai jisme hum padarthon ke naam ki jagah unke formulas ka use karte hain.
βοΈ 3. Balanced Chemical Equation
A balanced chemical equation has equal number of atoms of each element on both sides.
πΉ Example:
Hβ + Clβ β 2HCl
π Hindi: Balanced equation mein har element ke atoms reactants aur products dono taraf barabar hote hain. Isse mass conservation hota hai.
π 4. Types of Chemical Reactions
πΉ (i) Combination Reaction
Two or more substances combine to form a single new substance.
CaO + HβO β Ca(OH)β
π Do ya adhik padarth milkar ek naya padarth banate hain.
πΉ (ii) Decomposition Reaction
One substance breaks down into two or more simpler substances.
2Pb(NOβ)β β 2PbO + 4NOβ + Oβ
π Ek padarth toot kar do ya adhik padarth banata hai.
πΉ (iii) Displacement Reaction
A more reactive element replaces a less reactive one.
Zn + CuSOβ β ZnSOβ + Cu
π Zyada reactive dhatu kam reactive dhatu ko hata deti hai.
πΉ (iv) Double Displacement Reaction
Ions are exchanged between two compounds.
NaβSOβ + BaClβ β BaSOβ + 2NaCl
π Do compound apne ions ka exchange karte hain.
πΉ (v) Redox Reaction
Oxidation and Reduction occur together.
Oxidation: Gain of oxygen / Loss of hydrogen
Reduction: Loss of oxygen / Gain of hydrogen
π Oxidation aur reduction ek hi reaction mein hote hain.
π 5. Effects of Oxidation in Daily Life
𧲠(i) Rusting of Iron
Fe + Oβ + HβO β FeβOβΒ·xHβO (Rust)
π Lohe par zung lagna oxidation ka result hai.
π’οΈ (ii) Rancidity
Oils and fats get oxidized and smell bad.
π Tel aur ghee kharab ho jaate hain aur smell karte hain.
π Important Questions for Practice β With Answers
β
1 Mark Questions
Define a chemical reaction.
π A chemical reaction is a process in which new substances with different properties are formed from the original substances. What is rancidity?
π Rancidity is the condition in which fats and oils get oxidized and develop a bad smell and taste.Write the balanced equation for rusting.
π 4Fe + 3Oβ + 6HβO β 4Fe(OH)βWhat type of reaction is this: Zn + HβSOβ β ZnSOβ + Hβ
π It is a displacement reaction.
β
2 Mark Questions
What is a balanced equation? Why is it important?
π A balanced chemical equation has an equal number of atoms of each element on both sides.
π It is important to obey the law of conservation of mass.Difference between combination and decomposition reaction (with examples):
| Combination Reaction | Decomposition Reaction | |---------------------------------------|------------------------------------------| | Two or more substances form one. | One substance breaks into two or more. | | CaO + HβO β Ca(OH)β | 2Pb(NOβ)β β 2PbO + 4NOβ + Oβ |Give two observations when magnesium ribbon burns.
π (i) A bright white light is produced.
π (ii) A white powder (magnesium oxide) is formed.
β
3 Mark Questions
Explain redox reaction with example.
π A redox reaction is one in which both oxidation and reduction occur simultaneously.
Example:
CuO + Hβ β Cu + HβO
Here, CuO is reduced to Cu and Hβ is oxidized to HβO.Give one example each of:
π Combination: C + Oβ β COβ
π Decomposition: 2HβO β 2Hβ + Oβ
π Displacement: Fe + CuSOβ β FeSOβ + CuBalance and explain: Fe + HβO β FeβOβ + Hβ
π Balanced equation: 3Fe + 4HβO β FeβOβ + 4Hβ
π Iron reacts with water to form iron oxide and hydrogen gas. This is a redox reaction.

5 Mark Questions
Explain all types of chemical reactions with examples.
β Combination Reaction: CaO + HβO β Ca(OH)β
β Decomposition Reaction: 2Pb(NOβ)β β 2PbO + 4NOβ + Oβ
β Displacement Reaction: Zn + CuSOβ β ZnSOβ + Cu
β Double Displacement Reaction: NaβSOβ + BaClβ β BaSOβ + 2NaCl
β Redox Reaction: CuO + Hβ β Cu + HβODescribe effects of oxidation in everyday life. How can we prevent rusting and rancidity?
β Rusting of Iron: Iron reacts with air and water to form rust (FeβOβΒ·xHβO).
β Rancidity: Fats and oils get oxidized and become smelly.
β Prevention:
β’ Rusting β Use paint, oiling, galvanization.
