B. Morphological / distribution/ habitat info
Morphological
Taro can grow to a height of 1-2 m, consisting of a central corm below the soil surface. It has large, heart-shaped, green or purple leaves, accompanied by long petioles measuring approximately 25-80 cm in length. The corn has a high level of carbohydrate and has 70-80% starch with small granules, making it easily digestible.
Distribution
Taro is native to tropical Southeastern Asia, China, Japan, and the West Indies and continued to spread as an important crop in Asia, the Pacic, Africa, and the Caribbean.
Habitat info
It grows in warm temperate zones and tropical regions. It prefers well-drained, rich, loamy soils, although it is adaptable and can grow in a range of conditions, including flooded fields.
C. Traditional uses / TK-related info
Culinary
Taro is valued by many cultures for its diverse culinary uses. It can be boiled, mashed, or roasted, and used in soups, desserts, and as an accompaniment to side dishes. Taro has a unique taste that can be used in both savory and sweet dishes, such as the well-known Taro bubble tea, a favorite beverage enjoyed globally. In addition to its culinary uses, some cultures have traditional medicinal applications, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
D. Any related scientific studies, such as ecology/conservation status/threats/diversity
Conservation status
There are no known major threats to this species. However, the habitats in which it grows are under pressure from urban development and climate change.
