Course Description:
During the year 2020, COVID-19 related measures have impacted societies across the world in deeply significant ways. Our lives have become mediated to a much higher degree than probably ever before. Activities ranging from political information seeking and taking classes to maintaining relationships are being conducted in increasingly mediated settings. New technological innovations have become commonplace in a very short time and within a very short time, people across the world have learned new behaviors and formed new habits, not only in the context of health behavior but also in the context of learning and using new media.
In such a time, studying research exploring new media environments becomes more relevant and timelier than ever before. This course proposes to introduce students to research in digital media and may be helpful in developing future research projects and programs rooted in new media environments.
The course will cover past research on digital media to develop an understanding of theoretical and methodological frameworks of interest and will extend this understanding to study current work on social media, immersive media (VR), and applications of artificial intelligence in media environments.
You have to present a research proposal based on an original research idea to the class. The assignment carries 20% of your total grade. More detailed guidelines are as follows:
Format: Each presenter will be given 20 minutes for the presentation. Out of these 20 minutes, 15 minutes should be allocated for presentation and 5 minutes for discussion and feedback.
Objective: The primary objective of the assignment would be to present a theoretically grounded proposal that involves a brief introduction of the background of the problem/issue of interest, an overview of the literature review and a set of hypotheses and/or research questions, an explanation of the argumentation process behind the hypotheses and RQs, and an overview of the method section for the study.
The project will require developing an annotated bibliography exploring literature from a student-selected area of interest. More specific details are as follows:
• You will be selecting a specific area of research. To make sure that your topic is specific enough for the project, please discuss your topic with the instructor before you start working on the bibliography.
• The document should be 10-15 double-spaced pages long. It should use APA style.
• Please provide a 1–3 page introduction to your bibliography. This section should introduce the research area of interest and should also provide description of research objectives that are guiding your literature search for the bibliography.
• For each article included in the bibliography, first provide the citation for the article followed by the annotation.
• You will be required to provide your own annotations based on your reading of the article. Please do not use the abstract provided with the article as annotation.
• Annotations will involve a brief overview of the theoretical framework, methodology, and findings presented in the study. They will also provide a brief critical analysis of the work.
• Each annotation should be at least 100 words long.
