PURPOSE OF THE COURSE
This course is designed to give students a deeper understanding of the case study method and its applicability within mass communication research, particularly that of media studies. The first half of coursework considers the theoretical application and case study research design and methods, while the second half examines recent case studies of multiplatform and/or digital format media production and consumption to illustrate the ongoing transformation of our media systems. The class structure is designed to teach students the necessary skills to employ this approach and allows them an opportunity to develop research that utilizes it.
This final assignment —building on concepts used with your article review and presentation— requires you to create a research proposal design that employs case study methods. This proposal will include standard elements such as specification of the problem, research questions and literature review. Ideally, it will be something you can refine and complete for a conference of journal. As such, your design should relate in some way to your own research agenda (present or future).
During the last two (full) weeks of class, each student will present their design in class for approximately 15 minutes (schedule TBD). Students may use a PowerPoint or other visual presentation tool but are not required to do so. This exercise is intended to inspire constructive feedback from others in order to refine your design prior to the paper’s deadline, which is 5 p.m. on 12/12/23 via Blackboard. We will discuss specific details about this assignment as it approaches, but in general, page count should be 12 – 20 pages.
