This Bokashi bin turns everyday food scraps into healthy soil. It’s easy, odor-free, and perfect for families to use right in the kitchen.
The Town of Greenburgh is food scrap friendly! Our Food Scrap Recycling Program accepts resident food scraps for composting.
Food scraps make up a large portion of the trash sent to landfills and incinerators, but they’re not trash. They are a valuable resource that can be turned into nutrient-rich compost.
Recycling food scraps:
Captures nutrients and energy and returns them to the soil
Reduces greenhouse gas emissions, food scraps in landfills produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas
Avoids inefficiency in incinerators, food scraps contain water and don’t burn well
By composting food scraps, we turn waste into a useful product that helps our soil, water, and air stay healthy.
By recycling your food scraps, you’re reducing waste and creating compost, a double win for Greenburg!
Compost is a soil amendment that enriches the soil. It helps plants grow stronger, prevents soil erosion, and reduces the need for water, fertilizers, and pesticides. Every time you use potting soil or see landscapers apply “dirt,” you’re likely using compost.

Store + Transfer: Most residents fill the pail 3–4 times per week and move scraps to the transfer bin until drop-off.
Drop off: Take food scraps to the drop-off site as often as needed.
