Would you rather be the main character in a video game or in a storybook? Why?
If you could make a rule that everyone in the world had to follow, what would it be?
Start in a large circle
Today we are going to do an activity together to reveal big ideas.
I will read a statement then pause.
if you agree move into the circle if you agree . If you are not sure, or do not want to move, pause and think to yourself about the statement.
Statements:
I have noticed someone left out of an activity, and no one did anything to include them.
I know how it feels to be left out.
I have noticed someone being bullied and no one stuck up for them.
I know how it feels to be picked on or bullied.
I have stuck up for others in difficult situations.
I have stuck up for myself in difficult situations.
How did it feel to move into the circle?
What do you think the Big Idea is today?
We have been learning tools to activate our I Can Power. Starting today, we'll practice using our I CAN power to do hard things and move mountains. Today's big idea is "Sticking up for yourself and others." We will activate our I CAN power to move this mountain!
When I say Mountain, you say Mover! Mountain!
Warm up (3-5 minutes)
Place cones in a triangle approx 30 ft apart.
" IN THIS ACTIVITY WE ARE GOING TO THINK ABOUT DIFFERENT SITATIONS AND WHY YOU WOULD STICK UP FOR SOMEONE, OR WHAT YOU MIGHT KEEP YOU FROM STICKING UP FOR SOMEONE."
I will read a statement, when I say "WHY?" move to the first cone and think about why you would stick up for someone, share as a team.
When I say "WHY NOT?" run to the other cone and think about why you would NOT stick up for someone, share your thoughts as a team.
When I say "MOVE BACK TO START" we will return to the start cone and do this a few times with different scenarios.
Scenarios:
Taylor, the kid who picked on you at recess last week, trips and falls during a basketball game. Your friends laugh. Why would you stick up for Taylor? Why wouldn't you stick up for Taylor?
A girl in your team named Tiffany dresses differently that the rest of the girls on the team and is interested in different things. When everyone is asked to pick a partner, nobody picks her. Why would you stick up for Tiffany? Why would you not stick up for Tiffany?
Your class has a substitute teacher. Your classmates are acting up and are giving them the wrong information about classroom rules. Why would you stick up for the substitute teacher? Why wouldn't you stick up for the substitute teacher?
Why is it sometimes hard to use our I CAN Power! to stick up for others, even when you want to or when we know it's the right thing to do? Maybe you think, "I am worried about what others may think" or "I don't know the right words to say"
What are some things you could say when someone might be making another person feel bad?
Don't yuck someone else's YUM!
Stop and think about what you are saying.
“Excuse me, it’s not OK to make fun of another person (or whisper behind their back or exclude someone). That’s not how we treat people at this school. Please stop.”
“If someone did that to you, what would you say to them?”
“You don't need to be this kind of person. You have the power to make the world better, so let's figure out how you're going to use that power.”
Workout: Stop and take a breather
Pre-select groups so that each group is diverse and not with the same girls who are always together. Pass out necklaces
"In our workout, we are going to practice using our Stop & take a breather tool to stick up for others and ourselves. Let's review how to use the tool before we begin."
STOP- First Stop!
Breathe: Then take 5 deep breaths using our 5-finger breathing tool.
Think: How could you stick up for yourself or others in this situation?
Respond: Choose one way to respond and try it out!
Stop and take a breather: Have Scenario copies ready for groups to read and practice together. (make copies of Lesson 10, difficult situations, and cut them into separate scenarios. Hand each group a scenario when stopped.
For the first 3-4 laps, you will be assigned to a group of 3-4.
As we complete laps, the coaches will yell, "Mountain Movers Meet!" and you and your group will stop.
As a group, you will read the scenario, practice the Stop and take a Breather tool, discuss a possible response then share it with the coach.
Last of the 3-4 laps: When is it hard for you to stick up for yourself and others? When might you need to use your I CAN Power to stick up for yourself and for others in real life? Have students fill out their journal, "Today we learned that we can use our I CAN Power to move mountains. Find "Sticking up for yourself and others" in your toolbox and write or draw 1 thing you learned about moving this mountain.
Wrap Up:
Write your laps,
Collect Feet
Return the necklaces and remind them "Before the next practice, try to use your I CAN Power to stick up for yourself and or others. "
