Today's big idea is Self-Talk! Self-talk is what you say to yourself in your head or out loud. Each of us has I CAN! Power within us.
What kinds of things might we say to ourselves to trigger the I CAN! Power?
Positive Self-talk such as:
"I got this!"
"Keep going!"
"Si se puede!"
"I believe in me"
What kinds of things might we say when our "I can't" voice creeps in and we don't feel like we can do hard things?
Negative Self-talk such as:
"I'm not good enough.""
"I should give up"
"Our self-talk matters! We can let our "I can't" voice creep in and convince us to give up, or we can use positive self-talk to activate our I CAN! Power and stick with something, even if it's hard."
"One of the easiest ways to change our self-talk is by using the word YET! The word YET is like a shield that protects us against our "I CAN'T voice and reminds us that some mountains just take a little longer to move."
When I say "Mountain," you say "Mover!" Mountain.... MOVER!
Turn to page 7 in the Journal: Our YET Shield
Take a negative self-talk statement. "I can't complete a 5k!"
Add YET to it: "I can't complete a 5K YET!"
Add what you CAN do: "I can't complete a 5K YET, but I CAN keep completing more laps!
Activity
Hand out "I can't " Cards to partners of 2 -(3 if necessary).
Ask them to change the negative statements to positive statements.
Have girls share the changes they made to the negative statements
"Now, raise your hand if you have ever made a mistake Well! Even though people don't like making mistakes, everyone makes them. Today we will learn why it's important to actually celebrate mistakes if we want to move mountains!
When I say "Mountain," you say "Mover!" Mountain.... MOVER!
I MESSED UP! Activity (YARN)
Share an example of a time you made a mistake trying something new or doing something hard.
Now, I will hold one piece of the yarn and pass the yarn to someone else. That person will share a mistake, hold on to a piece of the yarn, and pass it to another person. If you don't feel like sharing a mistake, say, "I've made a mistake before! " and pass the yarn while holding on to a piece.
We will continue until everyone gets a turn.
After everyone has had a turn, make sure to hold on to your piece of the yarn
"What do you notice about the yarn?"
"This web is like your brain when you try something new or take on a hard challenge and make a mistake...
Our brain makes new CONNECTIONS each time we make a mistake - just like each of the lines in our web!
Our brain literally GROWS when we stop to consider what we learned from our mistakes!
So ... the next time you make a mistake, GET CURIOUS and REMEMBER: You just changed your brain literally!"
Activity: Ball Toss Challenge
"Now that we know mistakes help us learn and grow, we are going to celebrate them whenever we can!"
Let's take a moment to create a MISTAKE CHEER! A word or sound and a movement.
We will use this cheer each time we make a mistake.
The goal of this game is to pass the ball to everyone in the circle without dropping it. Once you have a turn, move backward outside of the circle /
Everyone has to touch the ball
Only 1 person can touch the ball at a time.
You can not pass to someone next to you.
While the ball is being passed, everyone must keep moving, running arms, jacks in place, ,,, until the challenge is complete.
If the ball drops, we do our MISTAKE CHEER! Discuss what we learned, then start again with everyone back in the circle.
"How did it feel to use out MISTAKE Cheer? Doing a MISTAKE CHEER helps us remember to LEARN from our mistakes, we can keep going when things don't work out on the first try!"
"Before the next practice, use your YET shield to change your self-talk and try the MISTAKE CHEER! "
Hand out Journals.
Turn to page 14-15 : My GOTR Toolbox
"Today we learned one tool we can use to activate our I CAN! Power is Positive Self-Talk. Find Positive Self-Talk in your toolbox and write or draw 1 thing you learned about this tool."
Then find the CHEER megaphone symbol and write out our MISTAKE CHEER!
Ask yourself, Check out the last goal you set...
"Was my last lap goal too easy, too hard, or just right?
"How do I feel today?"
