If you were stranded on a deserted island, what 1 item would you want with you? Why?
What's 1 thing you anre looking forward to this week/weekend?
GOALS:
Playlist for 5K practice
Plates with face and assumptions
Try to learn more about someone on your team that you may not know so well.
BIG IDEA: Today's big idea is Dig Deeper! When we dig deeper, we consider more thatn our first thoughts or what's on the surface when we come across an idea or someone. To dig deeper, we need to learn more about an idea or get to know a person better. If we don't dig deeper, we might think something is true without proof. This is called assuming. Why do you think it is important to dig deeper instead of assuming?
Today we will be writing and drawing about ourselves. only write or draw what you feel comfortable about sharing. (pass out paper)
Each of you will have about 1 minute to draw your face on the paper.
Then you will have 2-3 minutes to write/draw 2-3 words/pictures that describe what people assume about you.
example: I don't know much because I am young... School is easy for me because I get good grades..
Next you will have 2 minutes to draw a heart on the other side of the plate and add 2-3 things that are really true about you.
I know more about _______ than my parents do. ... School related issues cause me a lot of anxiety.
Create a gallery walk for 1-2 minutes for each side of the plate. Give the girls an opportunity to walk around and read each paper.
"When people assume things about us, it can make us feel like they aren't really trying to get to know us. It's important to notice when we need to dig deeper, too, and remind ourselves that we might be wrong or need to lean more. Moving this mountain will take practice, but we can use our I CAN! Power to keep trying even when it is hard.
Warm up 3-5 minutes
ACTIVITY: Asking Questions.
"We can practice digging deeper by asking questions and letting others tell us more about themselves. Let's try it out!" (Create 2 lines of equal size teams lining up about 40 ft apart with cones in the middle spaced apart.
When I say "Go" you will quickly run to meet your partner from the other side. We will take turns looking at the heart side of our plates and choose one picture or word and ask your partner to tell you more about it.
You will get about 1 minute for partner #1 to ask and #2 to respond, and vice versa.
Then we will have one side move down 1 partner and repeat until we have returned to the original partner.
WORK OUT: (Need poster board and markers)
"We all have different mountains to move! What's hard for me may be easy for you. In our workout, we will think of different things that people assume are easy for use but are actually pretty hard!"
After your first 3-4 laps, write a response to, " Don't assume it is easy to .... and draw a small mountain to those you also find is a challenge or a "mountain"
Examples: "Don't assume it is easy to do math,.. Don't assume it is easy to do laps.
Wrap Up:
LAPS: Write your laps, Collect Feet
Journal: Turn to My GOTR Toolbox. Today we learned that we can use out I CAN! Power to dig deeper. Find the ? in your toolbox and write or draw 1 thing you learned about this mountain.
Return: Return the necklaces and remind them "Before the next practice, try to use your I CAN Power to stick up for yourself and or others. "
