Interpersonal Effectiveness skills are defined by Positive Psychology as "the ability to interact with others." They include three main goals of "gaining our objective, maintaining our relationships, and keeping our self-respect." (17)
Interpersonal effectiveness skills are most commonly worked on in a group setting, allowing for the application of communication skills with others. It can also be taught in an individual setting where a therapist, or yourself, teaches you some skills to use when talking to people, such as the worksheets below. (17)
Interpersonal effectiveness skills can be used by anyone looking to hold a more confident stance in their relationships with other people. It can also be used to learn more about relationships in general, how to set proper boundaries, and how to assert yourself. These skills allow you to be respectful to others, while still holding your ground.
A quick note about these worksheets. I have used a lot of them in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). These worksheets have changed my life in so many ways... They taught me that there are ways I can handle my depression in a healthy manner, while tackling the issue at the core. Even if you are not depressed, these worksheets are a way to build skills that will last you a life time.
