My name is Ana Bordeianu and I am a senior in high school. For the past five years, I have been struggling with an illness that affects millions of teens each year: depression. While my struggle does not define me, it has become a big part of my life. And so, I have decided to reach out to my community and share my personal story in addition to educating others on the topic of depression.
My firsthand battle with depression has put into perspective how such a large issue can go unnoticed and therefore undiagnosed. As a teenager with many friends at school, I hear stories about their struggles with mental health issues, and I realize that their accounts are just a few out of the thousands of people who go silently through the same experience. Knowing about all of this suffering makes me want to change the approach that people take to mental illnesses, to educate others on this topic, and to transform how high schoolers deal with mental illnesses.
I decided that I was going to do something to help. In response to the growing issue of mental illnesses among high schoolers, I have decided to focus my Girl Scouts Gold Award on depression. Experiencing firsthand how depression has affected my life, I have decided to educate students and adults on what they can do to help or prevent this rising issue and how to keep a "Golden Mindset." To accomplish this goal, I plan to lead informative group sessions, create this educational website, and share these resources with my community.
I will be focusing on the following key areas: identification, coping skills, and outside sources. Using these tools, I hope to make this website a place where everyone can learn about the things happening to people they love and themselves.
The reason for doing this project is simple: I want to help teenagers who go through the same thing I do. Depression is something so common, and yet the help is rare. I want to show that depression does not have only one face and that it can be beaten.
I am hoping that my project will reach adolescents around the globe who struggle or know someone who struggles with depression. While this website is directed towards teens with depression, adults and friends can still use it to spot symptoms and to help.
Through my project, I hope to help people who struggle with depression. As a student in high school, I feel as if I cannot help when people come to me with problems. Therefore, I hope to offer them a set of resources that will help them overcome depression.
As I have hopfully inspired you to know that you are not alone in your battle with depression, you could do the same by sharing your personal story. I would love to hear it and, with your permission, post it in order to inspire others. So, if you woud like to share your story or know more about me, feel free to email me at KeepingAGoldenMindset@outlook.com.
