Connecting HCFM to the Global Holy Cross Family
Father Willy Raymond, C.S.C.
President, Holy Cross Family Ministries
Dear Friends in Christ,
Greetings from Holy Cross Family Ministries home office, Easton.
Love that bears all and bares all.
Pope Francis has challenged the whole Church with a call to SYNODALITY, a dynamic of LISTENING especially to all the families we seek to serve by helping them pray. The goal of this church-wide listening is to hear the Voice of the Spirit guiding us in a new adventure of faith. Synodality gives all leaders in HCFM a golden opportunity to encounter families in a dialogue of listening with the heart, with love. In this dialogue, we may hear people yearning for changes in Church teaching and practice. They may want priests to marry, women to be ordained, same-sex marriages blessed, or a relaxation of the rules regarding divorce and remarriage. Listening does not mean condoning. Listening does mean that one acts with respect and love for all no matter who they are or what they propose. Here is where love enters the exchange. In my experience, the great desire of most people is not for solutions to problems or for perfect agreement, but rather for someone to take them seriously and listen with respect and decency. Such listening is an expression of love bearing all. Listening with love allows the other to bare all, to lay bare the mysteries of their own hearts. In doing so they encounter God’s love and care for them and their loved ones in the Church family. And that is a great act of a leader bearing all and baring all guided by the Holy Spirit. Let us all embrace synodality for the good of our mission to help families pray.

Father Peyton at Triduum in Long Beach, California, 1948
Father Peyton often spoke of the Rosary, particularly the family Rosary. In an excerpt for a talk given in 1944, he explains how the family Rosary tells the story of the Holy Family – the ideal family that God has set forth as a model, with difficulties to face, yet obedient to God’s will and facing it all together. Growing up in my overachiever household, Advent meant “Ready, set, rush!” Rush to purchase presents … rush to decorate the house for Christmas and New Year’s … rush to bake the holiday cookies...
One Saturday in December, the Museum of Family Prayer was bursting with energy and joyful laughter as at least 100 people from a variety of families created their own Christmas Creche figures. I was only able to stop in for a few minutes, but am so happy I did. The energy and joy in the museum were palpable.
Thanks to Caleigh, Jordan, Samantha, and interns Nick and Maria, who were joined by Father Jim and Father Leo with Robyn taking pictures. This was a great success! And the figures are a great take-home gift for families to help them celebrate Christmas in their own homes.
One young father said, “This is the best activity I could imagine.”
Kudos to all!

Marriage: one of the most common institutions across every time and culture. But what do Catholics mean when they talk about marriage? Why are there so many rules around it? We go beyond the wedding day to explore what a Catholic marriage really is, and what it means to the family and society as a whole.

United in the boundless love of Our Father for each other and all of God’s creations, the Holy Family serves as a shining light guiding us in prayer and in raising our families throughout our challenges, suffering, and moments of great joy. Venerable Patrick Peyton, learned early on the power and promise of family prayer that strengthened him in overcoming severe illness to live a life devoted to sharing this message to millions throughout the world.
As we live through very challenging times, Holy Cross Family Ministries (HCFM) is deeply committed to carrying on the mission of Father Peyton. The McFaul family shared with our HCFM team how Father Peyton inspires and unites their family by praying the Rosary. “Prayer and devotion to Mary, our Mother, is the pathway to Jesus,” says Sean McFaul.
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As we celebrate the birth of our Savior, contemplate the theme that Love Bears All - the Holy Family, with the echoes of the Year of St. Joseph in mind, I was drawn to reflect on the importance of fathers. St. Joseph and John Peyton, father of Patrick Peyton, are two shining examples. Both men’s faith led them to love their wives and children in a way that only a husband and a father can. Each man reminds us of the beauty of God’s plan lived out within our families that bear fruit that benefits not only a family but society as a whole.

Christmas 2021 has been a most special time for us at the HCFM PrayFest Community. In the weeks of Advent leading up to Christmas, our ministry centers in 17 countries presented their Advent wreaths with 4 candles - 3 purple and 1 rose. With the lighting of each candle, the passage of sacred time grew brighter leading up to the great celebration of Christmas.

Dear Jesus,
Father Peyton devoted his priestly life to strengthening the families of the world by calling them to pray together every day, especially the Rosary. His message is as important for us now as it was during his life on earth.
We beg you, therefore, to hasten the day of his beatification, so that your faithful people everywhere will remember his message that the family that prays together stays together, will imitate him in his devotion to your Mother and ours, and will be inspired by his holy life to draw ever closer to you with childlike confidence and love.
Amen.
