EMPOWERING THE YOUTH IN OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY
EMPOWERING THE YOUTH IN OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY
Dedicated to strengthening civic engagement opportunities for the girls and women in our school and surrounding communities, we executed an additional project: the Empowerment project. In honor of Women's History Month, the Larchmont Charter School Scholar's Circle organization (a tutoring and mentoring program) collaborated with the Larchmont GBLA team and the Larchmont Bridge Organization to organize videos featuring a State Senator and U.S. Representative. Senator María Elena Durazo, the State Senator representing the 24th State Senate district, has warmly sent Larchmont Charter School a video delivering her story of becoming a California state representative and how she used her platform to serve the community. Congresswoman Judy Chu, the U.S. Representative for California's 27th congressional district, has also participated in the Larchmont Charter School video delivering her story of strength and breaking barriers. We presented these videos to all members of the Larchmont community (e.g., students, parents, and staff).
In collaboration with our school's Arts & Crafts club, we designed a superhero mask craft project for the Larchmont elementary students, incorporating knowledge about astounding women throughout history. The superhero masks were symbolic of the heroism of these women and were a vehicle to show the students that anyone has the potential to be a hero - even themselves. The care bags we created for the students included plain superhero mask bases for them to decorate, crayons, construction paper cutouts, and a Women's History Month activity booklet designed by the Larchmont Girls Build LA team. The Arts & Crafts club also made a video tutorial for the students to follow at Hollygrove's morning sing. Together, we created 200 care bags that Hollygrove students picked up through their weekly grab-and-go lunch pick-up. We provided an authentic learning opportunity that helped inform our younger generation of the astounding women throughout history and cultivate a more informed generation who will make lasting impacts on their communities and, ultimately, our country.
