In mid-August of 2020, three (3) transgender women were attacked and assaulted by a transphobic man in Los Angeles. The perpetrator yelled derogatory slurs, robbed their valuable belongings, and went as far as to attack one of the women with a glass bottle.
Unfortunately, not one person stepped in to help the three women. Bystanders watched and encouraged the attacker. These incidents of sexual assaults occur quite often and go unnoticed. According to a U of C survey, 71% of women from a group of 2,219 people experienced street harassment. These actions can not, and should not, be tolerated.
Our goal for the years 2020 and 2021 is to make the girls and women in our school and surrounding communities feel protected and empower our future generation of female leaders to be active bystanders. We will achieve this by providing self-defense resources (e.g., self-defense classes) and hosting events for our school community's youth demographic. Through this, we hope to raise awareness of this tragic issue and inspire our future female leaders to one day take on a career that can empower the next generation of female leaders.
