Pixlr is a free image editing app from Autodesk.
There are two versions of the Pixlr app, an online version suitable for computers and an app suitable for tablets. Both versions are free and supported by advertising.
What can I do with Pixlr?
The online version of Pixlr includes many features of the industry standard photo editor, Photoshop without the price tag. Pixlr is a great way to edit photos, layers, cut out backgrounds and shapes, as well as apply filters.
Go to pixlr.com
Choose the version of Pixlr you would like to use...
Pixlr X is an easy-to-use tool that anyone can use to make photos and images more creative.
Pixlr E is a sophisticated image-editing tool for both pros and talented amateurs.
If you are a beginner, Pixlr X is the best option. If you are an experienced user, or are used to using Photoshop, Pixlr E is for you!
Go to Open Image and choose a photograph from your computer.
If your photograph is large, you will be given the option to open a smaller version. Large photographs can cause problems on slower computers and Chromebooks, or when the internet connection is not reliable.
The image will open as a background layer and will automatically be fixed to the canvas. To unlock the layer, double click on the padlock underneath the image thumbnail on the right hand side of the screen.
The video takes you through the workflow to...
cut out parts of an image
place that image onto a different background
The video shows a blend between a foreground and background image.
By duplicating the same layer, you can use filters to create effects.
In this example, the colour is adjusted to black and white on one layer, and the boy we have already cut around is brought to the foreground.
There are lots of features available in Pixlr. With this basic understanding of layers and effects you can go ahead and explore!
