Meet is a video conferencing and meeting app which is part of Google Hangouts.
Google Meet provides simple video conferencing with up to 500 participants.
What can I do with Google Meet?
Host and join video and audio meetings, share your screen with others around the world.
Meetings are scheduled in advance using Google Calendar at calendar.google.com with notifications through GMail.
When adding an event into Google Calendar you have the option to add conferencing. This automatically generates a link for Google Meet.
Any documents which you attach in Google Calendar will also be available during the meeting.
You can go straight into Google Meet at meet.google.com to start (or join) a video conference.
Click the + to join or start a meeting. If you have been invited to a meeting through Google Calendar, you will see the meeting here. Click to meeting to join it.
The settings cog at the top right of the screen allows you to set up your camera, microphone and speaker.
Click the + to create an ad hoc meeting.
Choose Join now to join with camera/audio or Present to join the meeting by sharing your screen.
You can add others to the meeting by:
sending the link to them or
adding them directly with their email address
At the bottom of the meeting screen, you will see the tool bar...
Turn off/on microphone
Leave meeting
Turn off/on camera
Turn on captions
Present (share) your screen to others in the meeting
By pressing the 3 dots, you will bring up the additional menu with further options...
You can change the screen layout by pressing 'Change Layout'.
At the top of the screen you will see both a participants icon and a chat icon. By tapping here you can see the participants who are in the meeting, pin them (so they stay on your screen) and initiate text chat with them. Hangouts Meet manages who is on the screen during the meeting based on noise from their microphone.
Meeting participants inside your domain (at your school), who are logged in with their Google account will be able to join the meeting with no approval. Participants who are outside the school will need approval from someone inside the meeting.
Documents which were attached to the meeting in Google Calendar will be available to view in the pop up menu at the bottom right corner.
Your Google Administrator can see who has participated in meetings and how long they lasted. They are also to able to restrict who can take part in, or start meetings.
