Chroma Key (or Green Screen) is a way of recording movies or taking photos in front of a coloured screen, and using a computer to automatically replace the background.
It is commonly known as Green Screen because that is the most common colour of screen used. For best results, the colour of Chroma Key screens should be as far away from skin tones as possible. Bright blue and green are good choices.
You can either:
record the movie in front of a green background and add in the background effects afterwards (in post production) or
use an app to create the movie and background at the same time.
Tips for making Chroma Key Movies:
Have a consistent colour background and good lighting. This is essential for best results.
Always use a tripod or stand. If the camera moves against a still background the movement will be amplified.
Use an app to create the movie and background at the same time.
Green Screen by Do Ink is a standalone app for creating movies with Chroma Key effects in real time. It is recommended for younger students and beginners because you can see the effect of the Chroma Key right away, without having to wait until post-production.
The app is a paid app (HK$38) and is available only on the iOS App Store for iPads.
Open the app and click + in the top right corner to create a new project.
Click the lowest + in the bottom right corner to add the background layer.
You can add a photo or video layer here.
Click the top + in the bottom right corner to add the camera foreground layer.
Click the camera flip button to use the front facing camera.
Click the rainbow circle to adjust the chromakey colour and sensitivity of the camera.
The default background image running time is 5 seconds. Tap and drag the background image to extend the running length.
Make sure you have tapped the orange movie bar at the bottom of the screen., and movie is selected.
Tap the red record button at the top of the screen to start recording the movie.
You can toggle between movies/photos with the buttons next to the record button.
Tap the square at the bottom of the screen to stop recording.
Choose 'Preview' to review the movie, Show the export options or simply Save to camera roll
After recording, it is good practice to delete the project files from the app. This will save storage space on the iPad, and make it easier to load the app in future.
