CBD is a competency based medical education model that requires trainees to demonstrate competence in all the specified entrustable professional activities that make up the roles and competencies of Geriatric Medicine.
In this model, trainees progress through 4 stages in the competence continuum:
1. Transition to Discipline
2. Foundations
3. Core
4. Transition to Practice
Within each stage, there are specified entrustable professional activities (see EPA tab). Within each EPA, there are milestones that describe the competencies required, and specific assessment requirements.
Our Geriatric Medicine Subspecialty Training program will adopt CBD as our educational model on July 1st 2019.
You are a resident or fellow. You are required to be familiar with all the required EPAs in your stage of learning. You are responsible for initiating all required assessments. You need to think ahead and plan ahead regarding what EPAs you need to practice, gain competence, and achieve required assessments. Ask the assessor BEFORE performing the EPA to directly observe you and complete the assessment form. Please provide the assessor with the assessment form at the time of performing the EPA.
You are a consultant physician, nurse practitioner, allied health care professional. Your role is to observe trainee performance, complete and submit assessment forms that trainees give you. You are only assessing trainees on the specific current task. You are not making any overall decisions about "passing" an EPA.
You are a group chosen to review each trainee's portfolio, looking at all their assessments, exams, feedback, etc. As a group, you will make the decision of whether or not the trainee is competent in their required EPAs, and make decisions regarding promoting trainees to the next stage in the competence continuum.
