Hazlewood Act

What is the Hazlewood Act?

The Hazlewood Act is a State of Texas benefit that provides qualified Veterans, spouses, and dependent children with an education benefit of up to 150 hours of tuition exemption, including most fee charges, at public institutions of higher education in Texas. This does not include living expenses, books, or supply fees.

The first thing a Veteran will need to do if they have Hazlewood hours is transfer them to the dependent (student).

To start this process, the veteran should call (877) 898-3833 , which is the main number of the Texas Veterans Commission. They will then receive instruction on how to successfully transfer their benefits to their child.

After that is done, the student will need the following in order to use their Hazlewood hours for their class tuition costs:

  1. A copy of the Veteran's DD-214

  2. A screenshot or copy of the "TVC Hazlewood Registration for the Veteran" confirmation screen

  3. A screenshot or copy of the "TVC Hazlewood Registration for the Dependent" confirmation screen

  4. Proof that the Veteran is a resident of Texas (we recommend a driver's license)
