Friends of Garendon Park organise talks and data collection in various habitats within the Park.
David Robinson will shortly be doing a Presentation on "Wildlife in Garendon Country Park" and members will be doing transects on various species later this year. Here is a report on last year's activity
Wildlife Surveys
Butterfly surveys
David Robinson's butterfly survey continued for over twenty weeks. Several members have accompanied David (a local Naturalist) through the estate surveying butterfly activity within the park.
Moth surveys
David along with his “mothing” colleagues have invited members of the wildlife group to observe moths attracted to powerful electric lights and trapped. After moth identification they have been released. There have been three moth evenings in the park this year.
Results of butterfly and moth surveys are reported back to local and national organisations to identify trends in wildlife activity.
The butterfly and moth surveys are also an opportunity to observe other wildlife in the park, for example the Chicken of the Woods fungus shown below
Visit to Shepshed Water Mill
An enjoyable and informative evening was spent at the Shepshed watermill by about nine wildlife group members. Owners Haidee and Neil presented us with an overview of the building’s history along with an explanation and practical demonstration of the water mills operation as well as welcome drinks and cakes. Haidee also pointed out the number of different natural habitats that they had at the Mill.
David Robinson has also carried out a bat survey to identify the diversity of bats present at the Mill.
A possible future venture could include a moth and bat presentation / demonstration by David, which could be held at the mill.
Trees in the Park
Attention has been paid to trees within the park. Robb Doyle (who conducted the veteran tree survey for the Woodland Trust) and Ian Porter along with Anne and Martyn Speight took an initial walk round the park to identify tree species and their condition. Possible future activities may include path clearance and guided walks around the park, Robb has already suggested some routes for these walks.
