Plant it forward

plant, seed, cutting library

Plant it forward will be open 8:00 to 5:00pm for you to come and get or swap seeds, small plants or cuttings. Bring a container to hold paper pots - they won't be 100% bullet proof rolling around your car. Bring damp newspaper or paper towel for cuttings to keep them moist on the trip.

Posts on Instagram will indicate what's available. For the address & details, please message Gardening Naturally CQ.

To access details (address etc), send a message on Instagram or Facebook.

No holds -sorry.

You can help by returning any plastic pots we do use, so they can be kept in circulation and not make their way into the waste stream.

Guidelines for swapping: Please label plants/seeds/cuttings clearly. A botanical name would be great! Seeds should also include the date when they were picked.

Please avoid species that are likely to become weedy.

Philosophy: In times gone by, cuttings, seeds and advice was freely shared among gardeners. For many reasons, that way of life has largely disappeared. Unless you're actively out looking, it can be hard to find seeds, cuttings or plants from the edible category.

Plant it forward is about trying to look back a little, and provide plant materials so gardeners can #growathomeandsave. Three principles underpin the concept - sustainability, equity, and connection.

Sustainability: I'll try to ensure pots and labels will generally not be plastic - we’ll try and find sustainable ways to avoid contributing to the microplastic epidemic. Currently I'm trialing paper pots that can be planted directly in the soil.

If you're happy to share, we'll happily take whatever you have in whatever container you provide. Please avoid species that are likely to become weedy.

Equity: All seeds, plants and cuttings are free. We'd love you to swap - bring along something you can spare. We know that won't be possible if you're just getting started. But keep us in mind down the track...please.

Connection: There'll be a few generations who haven't had the chance to learn how to produce their own fruit and vegetables. Our aim will be to provide some of the information they need, and a low risk start so gardeners can begin making their own mistakes.
