The train passes rapidly across the State of Iowa, by Council Bluffs, Des Moines, and Iowa City. During the night it crosses the Mississippi at Davenport, and by Rock Island entered Illinois. The next day, which was the 10th, at four o'clock in the evening, it reaches Chicago. From there it traverses Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey like a flash, as if it fully comprehends that that party has no time to lose. At last the Hudson comes into view; and, at a quarter–past eleven in the evening of the 11th, the train stops in the station on the right bank of the river, just as The China, a steam ship headed for Liverpool, is leaving the pier.
The team is downtrodden, and sails across the Hudson to find a hotel. All tucked in for the night, they are agitated that they missed the fastest ship across the Atlantic.
The next day, Dr. Floyd observes all the ships to see if any are about to depart. He espies, anchored at the Battery, a trading vessel, puffing a cloud of smoke, indicated that she is getting ready for departure. He motions for everyone to approach what appears to be the Captain of the vessel.
"Captain?, when do you put to sea?
"bout an hour", the man says without looking up.
"You are bound for?"
"Bordeaux."
"Will you take passengers?"
"Never, I never take passengers." he states emphatically, looking Dr. Floyd square in the face.
"Is your vessel a swift one?" Dr. Floyd comes back in a challenging voice.
"The Henrietta, she does about 12 knots."
"And you are the owner as well?"
"The vessel belongs to me."
"Then I'll buy her from you."
"No!, she's not for sale."
"Sir, I need a means to get myself and my party across the Atlantic. Will you consider $200 per passenger."
"No, I despise passengers, too much trouble."
"I'll offer $2000."
"Apiece?"
"Yes"
The captain scratched his head. He looked at the size of the party. This would be a tremendous sum of money.
"For the dog too?"
"Yes, I'll pay the same for all."
"I leave at 9 o'clock, no delay."
"We will be onboard in one hour."
Mademoiselle Passepartout looks back toward the dock while your team rushes off to gather belongings and prepare for the voyage. On the dock, a bit further away she sees a familiar face watching the scene.
"You? But how could you be in New York?" Passepartout yells.
It was detective Fix. He greets Passepartout like an old friend, with smiles and a kiss on the hand. Dr. Floyd is puzzled by the reaction of his valet.
"C'est impossible! You could only be here with us now if you had been on the train from San Francisco. But of course, you have been following Dr. Floyd! You scoundrel!"
The conversation pitch increases as Passepartout explains her theory that Fix is attempting to thwart their efforts to complete the trip around the world. Fix, denies everything and pretends to be working as a merchant and travelling to make business deals.
"My name is Phileas Floyd. I'm so sorry my valet has accused you of any wrong doing. Can I make it up to you?"
"Well yes" says Fix. "I'm in need of transportation to London as quickly as possible." As he says these words, he reaches in his pocket to feel the arrest warrant. Finally, he thinks he may have his chance.
...Stay tuned for the exciting conclusion.
Sometimes you need the fast vehicle. The way to get from point A to point B. A website would be nice, but that is a daunting task. Or is it?
Google Sites is the simple way to just click and start typing, copy and paste images, click and drag them around. There is no coding, no complex formatting.
Each member of your CLT will contribute to a Google Site created by all the teachers at Woodson High School. The template site is linked below. You will find your CLT's page and each individual will add an entry. You may add a text entry, an image entry, a video entry, or a Google Document entry. Have fun and design your page.
