"L'Outrance" of the Chemin de Fer du Nord, France was developed from a Sturrock 2-4-0 of the Great Northern. The Nord added a front bogie, a Belpaire firebox and made other modifications. The Outrance class hauled front-line expresses for 20 years, then spent another 20 years working secondary trains.
Some of this project was shown last year, so just a brief explanation here.
John Butler and I noticed that the cylinder disposition, driving wheel size and wheelbase of an LNWR Jumbo were very close to those of one of our favourite locomotives, the Outrance 4-4-0 of the Chemin de Fer du Nord in France. The Outrance was the further (French) development of a Sturrock 2-4-0 of the Great Northern Railway.
I obtained a used Jumbo from Andrew Pullen, and John set to work to produce the outside-crank chassis and displaced boiler connections. He then presented me with a beautifully-turned chimney and dome, leaving the rest to me. Having no metalwork experience (apart from modifying three Aster French Pacifics), I have found this both challenging and educational.
The project is near completion, the tender being finished, and the engine on the assembly bench. I will eventually write it up for the G1MRA's Newsletter & Journal, including an assessment of its viability.
