"Unravelling the impact of affective states on creativity"

Keywords: affective states, emotions, moods, creativity, decision-making, computational modelling

My PhD project will investigate the impact of affective states on creativity. Previous results have shown that affective states impact creativity both positively and negatively. It is unknown how those two contradictory lines of results co-exist. Recent results in the host team suggest that there is a strong variability in individual preferences (some people like ideas very adequate, and others very original), and that this preference impacts creativity. We will test the hypothesis that affective states modulate individual preferences and affect creativity. In other words, we hypothesized that positive affective states should boost creativity in people overall preferring adequacy of their ideas compared to originality, and the opposite for people preferring originality. The project combines creativity and neuroeconomics tasks to assess the relationship between preferences, affective states, and creative abilities. It is divided into three axes: 1) behaviorally and neurally characterizing affective state modulation in healthy subjects, 2) designing a personalized tool for affective state modulation, and 3) investigating creativity-related preferences in bipolar disorder and depression. The research employs a multidisciplinary approach, including behavioural, clinical, neuroimaging, and computational modelling methods, to provide explanations of the role of preferences and affective states in creativity and potentially advance clinical assessment by creativity enhancement.
