Pitch Black is back, and I'm having a lot of feelings about it. Full review/commentary here: [link to this page] @MountainDew #MountainDewPitchBlack

I got some Pitch Black a few days ago. (Thank you again Amanda!) This flavor has been released and unreleased multiple times since 2004, so this wasn’t my first taste, but I don’t think I ever wrote a review for it. Better late than never, right?

First, let’s get one thing out of the way: This is definitely a grape Dew. They change the description with every release, and apparently they’ve decided to go with “dark citrus punch” this time. That is absurd. It’s grape. Not as grapey as the Japanese flavor Violet, but grape nonetheless.

I’m not much of a grape soda person, so Pitch Black isn’t one of my favorite Dews, but it is the 2nd best grape soda I’ve ever had. (An alternate version called Pitch Black II came out in 2005, which was pretty much the same flavor, just with an added sour kick. Pitch Black II is the only grape soda that I would rank above Pitch Black.) Even without being a big grape fan, I completely understand why this one has such a cult following.

Though I do highly recommend trying this one if you haven’t already, I have to warn you, it has probably the most ridiculous history out of any other Dew flavor that’s ever existed. The people in charge of such decisions clearly can’t decide whether they want this one to be a permanent flavor or not. The most glaring example of this is DEWcision 2016, which pitted Pitch Black against Baja Blast, and said that the winner would remain a permanent flavor in stores. Despite Baja Blast’s absolutely INSANE levels of popularity and devotion, Pitch Black got the most votes… and then was later removed from shelves anyway.

This summer is going to be a shitshow, because rumor has it that DEWcision 2023 is going to be Pitch Black versus my favorite Dew of all time, Typhoon. I feel bad for the diehard Pitch Black fans who rightfully shouldn’t have to repeat this, and I’m already bracing myself for the heartbreak of saying goodbye to Typhoon again regardless of the voting outcome, since we’ve been lied to before.

Long story short, Pitch Black is fantastic and you should definitely taste it, but for the sake of your emotional wellbeing, try not to fall in love with it.

Note: Amanda is my friend/former coworker who would buy me bottles of Dew occasionally since I always shared my work snacks with her.
