Remember that meme from several years ago, when everyone was arguing over whether the dress was blue and black or white and gold? Well, get ready to meet the Mountain Dew version of that.
This is Infinite Swirl, the newest in Mountain Dew’s permanent lineup. It’s a 7-11 and Safeway exclusive, which actually works out nicely for me since 7-11 is one of my usual Dew stops anyway. (I normally hate the convenience store exclusives because, until now, they were always franchises that I didn’t have near me.) It’s described as a “pineapple berry” Dew, but… Well, you might not get both pineapple and berry.
I first heard about this one from Amanda, who has been my Dew supplier many times in the past. She told me that she couldn’t detect any pineapple, but “it does taste blue.” I had no idea that this flavor was coming, let alone already available, so I frantically Googled it immediately after Amanda texted me.
The Mountain Dew Wiki painted a very different picture of Infinite Swirl. The description there was heavily focused on the pineapple part and, to my absolute shock, frequently compared it to Typhoon. Typhoon was my favorite Mountain Dew flavor for 14 years, and just recently got unseated by a very similar flavor, so the idea of another Typhoon-adjacent flavor coming into existence, (especially a permanent one!), was huge news for me.
That being said, I was skeptical. If they were going to introduce a new permanent flavor that was so close to Typhoon, why not just make Typhoon permanent? Why make a new flavor at all? Also, not to be super obvious, but the liquid itself is blue. In my opinion, that implies an emphasis on the berry part, not the pineapple part. With all of this in mind, I felt far more inclined to believe Amanda’s interpretation than the Wiki description.
I took a sip. My jaw dropped. I gasped. My hand flung to my chest to clutch at my heart. I could just barely taste a sliiiiight hint of berry, but, yeah, I was wrong. That was goddamn Typhoon.
I was about to chalk it up to Amanda having temporarily defective taste buds somehow, until Curtis walked by when I was about halfway through the bottle. I handed it to him, told him to try it, and asked him “What does that taste like to you?” The plot thickened when he replied “Weird blueberry.”
Y’all, I am SO CONFUSED. I have never heard such wildly different perspectives of the same Dew before. In the case of Curtis and I, it was even the exact same bottle! I’m dying to hear from more people who have tasted this one, because this is straight-up baffling.
But now for the real question: Is Infinite Swirl better or worse than Typhoon?
To be perfectly honest… It’s a tie for me. The berry aspect of Infinite Swirl is so subtle in my mouth, (though apparently not in other people’s mouths), it neither adds nor removes any delicious points from Typhoon’s baseline. I really, really, really love this flavor a lot, and I am beyond ecstatic to FINALLY have a Dew of my preferred genre that isn’t supposed to ghost me.
Oh, and it’s also my favorite color, so that’s pretty cool.
