In early 20th-century Paris, Pablo Picasso is already established in the art world, while friend and artistic rival Amedeo Modigliani tries desperately to catch up. Modigliani's problems only increase when he fathers a child with noblewoman Jeanne Hébuterne. The starving artist needs to provide for his family, and his only chance may come in the form of the 'Salon des Artistes' competition.
