Chitala ornata
The Clown Knife Fish is a striking freshwater predator originally native to Southeast Asia but now found in several Florida waterways due to aquarium releases. Its long, slender body, silver color, and distinctive black “eye spots” make it one of the most unique-looking freshwater fish in North America. The way it glides and swims—sometimes backwards—gives it an eerie, mesmerizing presence in the water.
Although not native to North America, Clown Knife Fish have established themselves as a popular game fish in parts of Florida, where they thrive in warm, slow-moving freshwater canals and lakes. Their appearance, size, and power on the line have earned them a dedicated following among exotic species anglers.
