Description: Using the 2019 California World Language Standards and some powerful strategies from OCDE Project GLAD, we will explore a thematic unit to identify strategies that engage novice speakers and pre-readers to get them to take on structures and vocabulary to read, write and present to their peers in French. See how “filling the bowl with language”, through singing, gestures, illustrating and crafting, being in charge of chart-making, book-creating and presenting to an audience are exactly what early immersion learners K-2 want to do, not realizing that this purposeful repetition and application is what it takes to develop language. They want to be scientists, book-makers, leaders, readers. We as their teachers and coaches can empower our young students to learn and use their second language in purposeful ways to increase proficiency and learning about their world.
