Sick time use has been Expanded by Governor Murphy as of July 2023. Unused sick time will roll over the following school year. Report your absence in AESOP/Frontline. This is the appropriate way to provide notice for a foreseeable sick day. There are "black out" dates that may require additional documentation for foreseeable sick time.
If you need to be out for an extended period of time and need to use the sick days you have, you may need to provide a doctor's note. A diagnosis is not required. When possible, provide advanced notice as your condition allows (ie. anticipated recovery from surgery). Use this sample letter as a guide.
A half-day is 3.5 hours. This will not cover an entire early dismissal or delayed opening workday.
3 Days of personal time may be used for any purpose. You may need to have your personal day approved if it is before or after a school break. If you have exhausted all of your personal days, you may request to borrow from the following year. Unused personal sick days will roll over to sick days the following school year. FREA members may use up to 5 CIF days. The absences should be scheduled as "personal" in AESOP/Frontline to ensure a substitute and proper attendance. Documentation from your family member's health care provider or hospice agency should be provided to HR as soon as is reasonable to have the absence records updated. x8511.

Members may use up to 5 DIF days following the death of a family member. This should be recorded as Death In Family in AESOP/Frontline. Family members include: spouse, parent, child, sibling, grandparent, parent-in-law, and child-in-law.
Under the New Sick Leave Expansion, employees may take up to 7 of their sick days for Bereavement. This is in ADDITION TO the contractual days. The law also defines family more broadly, including "any other individual related by blood to the employee or whose close association with the employee is the equivalent of a family relationship."
