In this activity we will explore how students use their first language (Swedish, in this case) as they work with the task called What happened to Kim. We will look at two excerpts.
Let’s start with Excerpt 1. Here Ed recaps their hypothesis so far (Kim went to a Tivoli, lines 1-4) and the information from the instructions card (Kim ended up at a petrol station, line 5) and displays some uncertainty concerning how some of the objects might fit together into a coherent story (see lines 7-8).
A) In line 8 Ed uses the Swedish word lapp (‘note’). Why do you think he is using Swedish here? In his turn, is there any indication that using Swedish might be problematic?
B) Look at line 9. What does Isa do in response to Ed’s use of Swedish?
C) How does Ed respond to Isa’s turn in line 9? What do you think that Ed is doing here?
Now let’s look at Excerpt 2. Here Walt develops his hypothesis: Kim fed the bear with apples at the Tivoli (lines 1-5). His solution about what happened to Kim is rejected by Sam (line 7) and by Iman (line 11). Iman then starts producing her own solution to the task problem: Kim fell and that’s how he broke his phone (the phone that this group of students received had a cracked display).
A) Look at lines 13-21 and make as many observations as possible.
B) Iman uses the Swedish word snubbla in line 23. Why do you think she is using Swedish here?
C) Look at line 27. What does Sam do in response to Iman’s use of Swedish?
D) How does Iman respond to Sam’s turn in line 27?
E) Consider the two excerpts now. How similar or different is the use of Swedish?
