It hurts watching him die.
It is often said that before one dies their life flashes before their eyes.
What is not often talked about is how when you look at a person who is dying their life flashes before yours. In that momentary instant that your eyes meet, the dam that held the flood of memories bursts. Your vision blurs and ears ring, as if your mind has no more room for the input that your senses provide. Overstimulated and absorbed in the nostalgia for the days that were and in a desperate plea for the days that will never exist.
You look as if it were your last, just in case it is the last look in which your souls touch. In fear that the next time you look, only you will remember those memories that were once shared.
