The individual oral (IO) is a 10-minute presentation exploring how a literary and a non-literary text address a global issue. Following this, there will be a 5-minute Q&A between the student and the teacher. The oral should be balanced, so that the lit extract, and then broader literary work are treated with the same attention as the non-lit extract and non-lit body of work in highlighting how the authors explore the global issue (a good guide is to imagine allocating 25% of your time to each of the four parts). Students choose the texts and global issue, and are required to prepare a one-page outline comprising a maximum of 10 bullet points. The IO is internally assessed, contributing 30% of the final grade for SL, and 20% for HL.
This guide will take you through the IO process step-by-step. Follow this guide and you will be well-prepared for the exam!
