Conservation efforts are paying off and things are looking better for the coastal waters of Malipayon. The ecosystem is recovering and the ocean is getting re-populated.
The leaders want to take things further to protect the fish. They have realized that enforcement and having no No-Take Zones or Reserves are not enough. It is also getting harder to enforce the rules with more and more fishers in the waters.
With the help of the community, the leaders implement more rules such as gear limitations, catch size limits, and fisher registration. Only registered fishers are allowed to fish in the community’s coastal waters.
This is the present-day season, where fishing activities have more restrictions. You may not fish in no-take zones marked by the community and local leaders . You may only catch adult fish. Only legal gears are allowed, use double nets and/or triple nets are no longer allowed.
Begin fishing when you hear “GO FISH”, this can be between 10 to 30 seconds and will continue until you hear “STOP”. You may still collect and count the fish in the gear after the "STOP" but cease to continue fishing.
After the fishing season is finished, count the number of adult fish, juvenile fish, and non-fish species/species with important conservation value you landed and report the total number to the Fish Traders. They will record the data in the Fisheries Catch Monitoring Form.
Rules to Remember
1. There will be a 2-minute discussion among the players on how to manage the fishery well.
2. Leaders continue to enforce no-take zones.
3. All fishers can fish.
4. Double net and/or triple net are not allowed.
5. Players can fish for 10 or 30 seconds, depending on the number of players per group.
6. At the end of the round, players need at least 10 adult fish to meet the needs of their families.
7. Trader/s will buy only adult fish. They will record all types of catch in the Fisheries Catch Monitoring Form. There
is no need to record illegal fishers’ catch. All players can help count the catch.
REFLECTION
• What happened?
• Are there still fish outside the no-take zones or reserves now that illegal nets are prohibited?
• How was the catch this time?
• Were illegal activities stopped with stringent laws?
