To find an effective solution to address overfishing and coastal issues, the first step is to define the problem, the target audiences and situational context, motivations and barriers for the different stakeholders in fisheries.
Rare developed the Fish Game to engage the participants' emotions, triggering and linking positive emotions such as the feelings of caring, nurturing, compassion with desired behaviours, and linking negative emotions such as the feelings of disgust or fear with unwanted behaviours.
This emotional demonstration game was based from What's the Catch? developed by the Environment Defense Fund (EDF). EDF describes the game as interactive and provides players with the opportunity to experience the perils of conventional fisheries management and the benefits of sustainable fishing practices. Rare has adapted the game to suit the context of the coastal communities in different Fish Forever countries.
The purpose of the game is to illustrate basic fisheries management concepts and facilitate conversations on fisheries management challenges, solutions, and insights. In the game, participants get to wear the shoes of a stakeholder in a fishing community.
