Imagine, we have traveled back in time to the 1950’s, to the coastal community of Malipayon.
Your beautiful and peaceful community has waters bountiful with marine life. There is an abundance of fish, making fishing a lucrative source of income for the people here. The best part is that there isn’t much competition around – there aren’t too many residents and fishers in the area.
The fishes you catch are among the biggest and healthiest fish around. Traders and buyers from around the world are insistent on buying your fish.
On a normal day, a catch of 10 adult fish is enough to sustain a fisher’s family.
INSTRUCTION
It is Open Access during this fishing season. This means that there are no fishing regulations such as catch limits.
Fishers can fish anywhere, catch any species, and use any gear they want.
When you hear “GO FISH”, everyone can start fishing between 10 to 30 seconds and will continue until you hear “STOP”. You may still collect and count the fish in the gear after the "STOP" but cease to continue fishing.
After the fishing season is finished, count the number of adult fish, juvenile fish, and non-fish species/species with important conservation value you landed and report the total number to the Fish Traders. They will record the data in the Fisheries Catch Monitoring Form.
Rules to Remember
1. There are no catch limits or spatial restrictions.
2. Leaders will observe in this round. ONLY the fishers may catch fish using any gear.
3. Diversify the gear being used.
4. Fishers can fish for 10 or 30 seconds, depending on the number of players per group.
5. Fishers need to catch at least 10 adult fish, which they will keep for their family, and more fish to sell to the traders.
6. Traders will record the catch in the Fisheries Catch Monitoring Form. Non-fishers may help count the catch.
7. Return all the fish pieces/catch to the fishery/table after recording.
