"Learning is a process where knowledge is presented to us, then shaped through understanding, discussion and reflection" ~Paulo Freire
What curriculum should be taught in the classroom?
What educational theories or philosophies guide my teaching?
As teachers, our curriculum can vary by the grade level and institution we teach in, but it is key that we promote a creative curriculum beyond the necessary academics. For instance, incorporating music, art, dance, etc. within our curriculum can help our students expand their skills of creativity. Various forms of artwork can help develop engaged and responsive individuals who will be prepared to develop their expressive creativity. The educational theories that guide my teaching are how my students will feel as they learn the curriculum I will be teaching. I will ask myself the following question, will my curriculum provide moments where students can actively share their experiences and thoughts on the topic we are learning? Consistency and diligence are things I hope to bring into my classroom every day. As teachers, it is our responsibility to promote positivity for students so they can be enhanced to learn throughout the day.
Which famous educators inspire my teaching?
Another theory that guides my teaching is accepting that mistakes are necessary for our learning process. However, it’s key to encourage our students to not give up but to continue to practice to accomplish their goals. A famous educator who inspires my teaching is Paulo Freire who emphasizes the pedagogy of the oppressed. Something that stood out to me from his teaching philosophy is that he highlighted how students can apply realization and education with a moral conscience. Understanding that there can be unfairness in education is something I hope to become very observant of specifically in my classroom as I will have students coming in from various backgrounds and socioeconomic classes.

The development of my Midterm Presentation on Maria Montessori’s Philosophy in Education gave me insight into the great influence hands-on activities can have on children’s learning. I connected Montessori’s philosophy to the Understanding by Design (UbD) Framework & the Universal Design for Learning Guidelines (UDL) as they demonstrate the effectiveness of representing material in unique ways. It helped me acknowledge the importance of how curriculum can be creatively utilized by the students when activities are created to help engage students.
This google slide presentation highlights the importance of incorporating the science curriculum into the classroom. Accommodating all science lessons to support all of our student’s learning is a significant way of teaching to help our students strive in the areas of STEM.
