Even though it may look like a lizard, the Tuatara is actually part of its own order, where it is different from all other reptiles. The Tuatara can pretty easily be connected to not moving a lot, not only by behaviour but also by genetics, something we've all had to relate to for the past couple of years.
The Tuatara will be removed from Fauna of the Year next year to help the other competitors.
The runners up were the Hector's Dolphin and New Zealand Fur Seal, followed by an underdog 4th place from the Harlequin Gecko.
This is not official or endorsed by Forest & Bird in any way. This competition is just for fun and raising awareness of more New Zealand native animals.
