Probably New Zealand's most famous animal outside of birds and sheep, the Tuatara has often been described as a 'living fossil', as it has largely remained unchanged from 220 million years ago, and the Tuatara definitely likes to take things slow, having slowest metabolisms and growth rates of any reptile. Although Tuatara have many threats, they can be threats themselves, as their prey includes seabirds and lizards.
