JDAM

JDAM weapons are guided by an INS/GPS set contained within the weapon and are designated as Guided Bomb Units (GBUs). The current inventory of JDAM weapons includes the GBU-31(v)1/B, GBU-31(v)3/B, GBU-32(v)1/B and GBU-38/B based on the Mk-84, BLU-109, Mk-83 and Mk-82 bombs, respectively.

It is best suited for static target like radars, radio towers, control towers, hangars.

Mission Planning

In this tutorial we are going to plan a strike on one single target only in steerpoint 6. However, note that you can plan to strike multiple targets and select their corresponding GPS coordinates to different steerpoints as explained in the tutorial GBU-39/B SDB

Note the Radar Strike in steerpoint 6. Click on 'Flight Plan' button (image below left)

In the new dialog that appear, select stearpoint 6 by pressing the arrow buttons and then click 'Assign' (image above)

The 'Target List' dialog opens. Select the target you want to strike (in this case the radar) and click on the 'Recon' button (image right)

The 'Recon' dialog opens. Note the coordinates on the upper left corner of the dialog. Select 'Designate as TGT STPT #6' by clicking on the arrows and then click 'Accept' (image left)

Close the 'Recon' dialog and save the target coordinates in the DTC by clicking on the 'Save DTC' button (imagen left)

Note that you can perform this selection for 4 different targets steerpoints on 4 different coordinates. For more information, please check the tutorial GBU-39/B SDB

Flight the mission

Select Air to Ground mode by clicking ICP -> A-G

Right MFD

Power on the JDAM ordnance by clicking OSB 7 (image below left). The JDAM ordnance will be ready in about 2 minutes and a half (image below right). In this mission I'm using the GBU-31A type of bombs.

ICP

When steerpoint 6 is selected for navigation, check the steerpoint 6 coordinates by clicking in the ICP: LIST -> 1 and select the steerpoints by clicking on the arrows (images right). You'll notice in the DED that they are the same coordinates as the radar coordinates we saved in the DTC during mission planning

HUD

When stearpoint 6 is selected and heading towards it, you'll see the time remaining to reach the pre-release zone, in this case 002:11, two minutes and eleven seconds (image below left). Note that in order to perform a 'Weapon release', the aircraft speed must be mach 0.5 or above.
When we are about to reach the pre-release zone, a horizontal bar will descend rapidly and a circle will appear (image below center)
When we are entering the release zone, the horizontal bar will descent slowly and when reaching the artificial horizon, the bar will start to move upwards. At the same time, on the vertical bar on the right, will see a small arrow withing the bar range moving downward. This is the moment to 'Weapon release' (image below right)

Perform a weapon release and if you want, you can change to TGP mode (FCR -> TGP -> STBY -> A-G) to check if the bombs reach their targets
If you have selected more target steerpoints during mission planning, you can select next steerpoint and release another bomb.
