Jazz Band
The Fairview High School Jazz Band is a premiere group of talented musicians, led by the ever energetic Band Director, Travis Keller. The program offers students of all levels the opportunity to learn and grow with the jazz idiom. Rigorous instruction takes place in the classroom four times per week during a regularly scheduled class period. In addition, students can audition to play in student-led combos that meet each week for a double period on block day. Student musicians are challenged to combine their musical talents in the making of Big Band sound, while also being encouraged to pursue cooperative efforts in the smaller ensembles, as well as individual solo work.
FHS Jazz Band performances include Fairview's Fine Arts Show Case "Extravaganza", as well as fall and spring concert nights. Other performance opportunities include jazz festivals, like the Mile High Jazz Festival and the UNC Jazz Festival.
FHS Jazz Bands are renowned for getting high marks at festivals and workshops and can boast All State Jazz Band players each school year. In 2015, Fairview's top jazz band was one of only two selected in the state to play at the annual Colorado Music Educators Clinic and Conference.
There are three levels of jazz band at Fairview with Jazz I being Fairview's top jazz band. Expectations for each level include the following:
A competent level of performance on chosen instrument.
Beginning to advancing understanding of fundamentals of improvisation.
Desire to listen to and understand styles of jazz.
Participation in the other parts of the Fairview Instrumental Music program, including Marching and Concert Band.
Attendance at all scheduled performances is required. Auditions for all levels are held in the spring for the following academic year. It is also understood that all wind and percussion players will participate in Fairview's Marching/Concert Band program.
