Litanei zur Muttergottes
Litany to the Mother of God
for mixed chorus and keyboard instrument
(piano, harmonium, organ)
composed: 1998
first edition by FNVverlag: 2003
The Madonna made by Michelangelo in the Church of Our Lady in Bruges (église Notre-Dame de Bruges) inspired Sergio Anton del Rio to his Litany to the Mother of God. The plain and solemn melody reminds to a Gregorian chant, especially with its repeated gesture. It is sung in unison by a mixed choir. The lyrics are taken from Latin description of The Madonna compiled by the composer. In spite of all similarities to a Gregorian chant, this litany builds a bridge between a romanticism sound and a medievel tradition.
