Syngnathys variegatus Pallas 1814 or Thickly snouted pipefish (EN) has a green/brown body colour adorned with light rings, creating unique patterns. It was only documented on the Black Sea, in Ukraine's shallow coastal zone. It normally is associated with vegetated areas and can be found alone or in small groups. This species is critically understudied and consequently classified as “Data Deficient” by the IUCN Red List. However, it is described as vulnerable in the Ukraine Red Data Book, due to population decline because of pollution and habitat destruction.
