Syngnathus rostellatus Nilsson, 1855 or Nilsson’s pipefish (EN), Petite aiguille de mer (FR), Kleine Seenadel (GE) or Mindre kantnål (SE) is a small green or brown pipefish distributed from Norway to the Iberian Peninsula, being present on the Baltic Sea and around the British Isles. It inhabits sandy estuarine areas or shore seagrass meadows. On the last, they align with the seagrass or stand over the sandy substrate.
Nilsson's pipefish distribution, according to IUCN (corrected by depth).
The breeding season is hypothesized to occur between late spring and summer, where one or two major spawning events were documented. During this season, the Nilsson’s pipefish migrates to shallow waters, where males mate with several females. The last seems to be the choosier sex, preferring to mate with larger males. More about their population dynamics, feeding habits, or reproduction is still unkown.
