The case-based discussion forum is an innovative and interactive learning activity that encourages learners to actively engage in discussion and feedback with their peers. It is also doable, as it provides clear instructions and guidelines for learners to follow (Park, 2017).
Case-based learning was more effective in improving knowledge acquisition and clinical reasoning skills. Case-based learning provides learners with the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills to real-world scenarios, which can facilitate deeper learning and better retention of information. The authors also note that case-based learning aligns with constructivist learning theory, which emphasizes the importance of active engagement and problem-solving in the learning process (Wouda et. al., 2019).
To make the learning activity more meaningful for the students, the case study should be relevant and engaging. The case should be realistic and reflect a situation that the learners may encounter in their practice as nurse practitioners in substance abuse treatment. This will help learners see the relevance of the ethical principles they are learning and apply them to real-world situations (Wouda et. al., 2019).
