concept and citations
For this class assignment, we were tasked with creating a tactile self-portrait. We started by drawing a self-portrait based on touch alone, without using a mirror or reference. I drew organic shapes and curving lines to convey the muscular regions of my face. Inspired by my layers of identity and personality, I decided to create a self-portrait of layered transparent fabric. By placing thin papers varying in color and opacity, I could create an almost watercolor-like effect when illuminated from behind. I could also convey the volume of facial structures, such as cheeks and nose. To define my face, I decided to embroider my self-portrait on top of the paper. Each stitch resembles a delicate prick of blood, allowing my inner self to penetrate through.
process
This piece required extensive research and technical steps. First, I divided the self-portrait into three screens with different regions. Then, I tested the layering ability and appearance of different papers, sorting them into categories for each facial region. From there, I built each screen from cardboard, traced a printed copy of my self-portrait, then cut and glued the paper on top. On the frontmost screen, I embroidered an outline of my self-portrait with red thread.
