Riso Prints
What is Riso?
“Riso” (理想) in Japanese means “ideal”. Riso is a style of print from risographs, digital duplicators invented by a Japanese printer company in 1946, using soy-based inks that dry through absorption. The risograph creates a stencil that is laid on a drum filled with ink that turns at a high speed, printing the ink through the stencil and onto the paper. As multiple layers of transparent ink are printed onto the paper, new colors emerge where inks overlap.
For this assignment, we were tasked with creating an event poster with 80%-100% text using existing fonts and Riso color swatches. I chose to design a poster for the cherry blossom season in Yangmingshan, Taipei, Taiwan. The event title "Blooming Clouds" reflects the appearance of blossoming trees, while the transparent layered text expresses the dreamy, elegant quality of the atmosphere of falling cherry blossoms.
First, I found fonts that expressed the soft and dreamy qualities of cherry blossoms, inspired by photos of Yangmingshan. Then I experimented with text arrangements using grids in InDesign, layering text. For the flower motif, I used asteriks. Initially, my designs developed along two styles: cute and elegant. In the later stages of iteration, I chose to focus on the elegant designs, as I felt they better captured the atmosphere of flourishing cherry blossoms. Due to the limited color palette, I experimented with opacity variation to distinguish text from the background.
