Hi! I'm Emmie Tsai, an artist from Los Angeles, California, who enjoys all art forms, from embroidery to editing videos. When not making art, I can be found reading, writing, or scrolling through Pinterest.
My first introduction to art was through books whose illustrations I emulated. As I moved on to novels without illustrations, I drew my own, manifesting my interpretation on paper. Then, I started to create my own stories.
In the hopes of fostering empathy, my art compels audiences to view life from different perspectives. As an artist, art is my voice; my paintings are a piece of myself. Through art, I embrace my heritage by painting LGBTQ+ Asian subjects in Western mediums, embodying me as an Asian American. Meanwhile, the historical settings of my LGBTQ+ characters symbolize how we have always existed, combating the misconception that we are unprecedented. I have always been interested in creating stories that tackle real-world issues through fantastical settings. For me, art is a place where I can challenge the status quo and search for solutions.
The greatest gift my art has given me is the opportunity to mentor others and augment their potential with my knowledge. In high school, I worked as a self-employed art tutor, a gratifying experience as I saw how my art could inspire others to express themselves creatively.
I am currently attending Otis College of Art and Design, majoring in illustration and minoring in Product Design. In the coming years, I hope to expand the breadth of my art and challenge my creativity.
