Students from our Music management & Sound course visited The Netherlands as part of our Erasmus+ partnership with Noorderpoort college in Groningen. Our students had a great opportunity to meet and engage with music students from the college and also partake in a work placement program with Eurosonic music festival & conference which takes place each year in Groningen.
My time on the Erasmus programme was one of the most enriching experiences I have ever had. I really enjoyed the collaboration process with the Dutch students from Noorderport. It was very enlightening to see how they run rehearsals in comparison to our processes and working with each other gave me another perspective on their methods of learning and producing. We played a gig in De Drie Gezusters which was supported by Pinguin radio. We learned so much about the logistics and planning that it takes to be able to run a gig. The rehearsal process in the lead up to Erasmus really supported us with this. The gigs were excellent, and we dealt with technical difficulties very well. It was incredible to be able to support each other in the preforming our own original material.
Working with ESNS (Eurosonic Noorderslag) an annual four-day music showcase festival and conference held in January in Groningen, the Netherlands, opened my eyes the massive scale of the music industry. I worked as an Artist Host and this job entailed working with the artists and making sure that all of their needs are met and that they loaded in and out on time. It was our job to keep the schedule moving smoothly. It was demanding work which ended up being quite physical, but we learned a lot about how events run on a large scale. We networked with lots of people in the industry and it was an excellent experience which will open up many doors for us in the future. It was very enjoyable to be living together in such a collaborative and creative environment for two weeks. Staying on the nature reserve was a very peaceful setting and I think as a group we were able to bond and create together in a lovely way. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the Netherlands.

My time in Groningen was wonderful. I got to spend some wonderful quality time with my friends and got the privilege of meeting some wonderful people during my time there.
Some of my work experience took place at Vera. I was in a van located outside of the venue with two others, both of which were working on recording the live music that was being played the time. My job was to time songs, write notes about them (genre, tempo, dynamics, structure, etc.) and rate them from 1-3. I did this for 5 musical acts, each with 40 minute sets, with 40 minute intervals between.
I also did stage crew at De Oosterpoort. There were 5 musical acts in total on the stage I was working at. I got to help with resetting the stage during the intervals, help artists with their individual setups, and assist in transporting gear.
I'm so happy I got the opportunity of this trip, and I'm very grateful for the entire experience and to have experienced it with such lovely people.

Our Erasmus+ trip to the Netherlands was exceptional. I got to participate in hands on work experience in the music industry at Europe's most influential music conference and showcase. We also had the honour of performing in the fringe festival with Pinguin Radio on two of their stages in the Drie Gezusters. The stress of performing abroad, with renting and managing our gear, transport, and set up in a fast paced festival venue was equal parts challenging and rewarding. Learning in a real world environment and having to adapt to new situations was a formative experience. I feel that I have come out of this Eramus+ trip with more experience of the industry under my belt, having pushed the boundaries of who I am as a professional in the industry.
